A 4-Week Inclusive Practice Plan
Introduction
This section provides a structured pathway for teachers who would like to begin applying inclusive practices in a manageable and practical way.
Rather than attempting to change everything at once, this plan focuses on one step at a time, allowing teachers to build confidence and reflect on their practice.
Week 1: Understanding Autism in Classroom Contexts
Focus: Awareness and observation
Teachers will:
- explore key concepts related to autism
- observe classroom patterns (engagement, communication, participation)
- identify one potential barrier in their classroom
Reflection Prompt:
What challenges or patterns do I notice in student participation?
Week 2: Applying UDL to a Lesson
Focus: Instructional design
Teachers will:
- select one lesson to redesign
- add at least one element of:
- multiple means of representation
- multiple means of engagement
- multiple means of expression
Example Adjustment:
Offer two ways for students to demonstrate understanding.
Week 3: Reflecting and Adjusting Practice
Focus: Reflection and improvement
Teachers will:
- observe how students respond to the adjusted lesson
- use the reflection framework or checklist
- identify what worked and what needs adjustment
Reflection Prompt:
Did the changes improve student participation or understanding?
Week 4: Strengthening Sustainability and Well-being
Focus: Teacher regulation and sustainability
Teachers will:
- try one short well-being strategy (e.g., breathing exercise)
- reflect on personal stress and classroom climate
- consider how teacher regulation impacts student experience
Reflection Prompt:
What small strategy can I continue using to support my well-being?
Final Reflection
- What changes had the most impact?
- What will I continue to use in my teaching?
